LRSD Forward Isn't Just About Closures: New Programs Coming in 2027–28
LRSD Forward Isn't Just About Closures: New Programs Coming in 2027–28
Most of the conversation around LRSD Forward has centered on school closures, and understandably so. But the district's plan also lays out new learning opportunities set to begin in the 2027–28 school year. If you're mapping out middle or high school options for your child, these are worth a closer look.
Here's what the plan includes.
Dunbar: International Studies returns
The plan adds an application-only International Studies component to Dunbar's existing business, leadership and entrepreneurship magnet, along with expanded world language opportunities.
Through project-based work, students would explore:
- Global economics
- International business
- Cultures and geography
One detail stands out for families thinking ahead to high school: the written plan includes automatic entry into Central High's International Studies program for students who are accepted into and successfully complete Dunbar's component.
Still to be finalized: admissions, language offerings and completion requirements.
J.A. Fair: A new sports sciences program
J.A. Fair would launch a sports sciences program, starting with an Elite Athlete Track for 28 sixth graders in 2027–28.
The first phase combines two pieces:
- Specialized PE and health instruction covering conditioning, nutrition, recovery and mental performance
- A Sports Business & Innovation course exploring the careers behind the game
Every LRSD middle school: More access to advanced coursework
This one affects families across the district. The plan expands and standardizes accelerated learning opportunities at all LRSD middle schools, including:
- Advanced math, English and science
- Opportunities to earn high school credit
It also builds in ways for more students to get there:
- Multiple entry points, so placement isn't a one-time decision
- Placement reconsideration requests
- Summer bridge courses to help students cover material they would otherwise skip
What families should keep in mind
These programs are part of a plan, and several details are still being worked out. If one of them could fit your child, now is a good time to start paying attention, so you're ready when admissions and enrollment information is released.
Closures deserve families' attention, but so do these changes. We'll keep sharing the details as LRSD finalizes implementation.
