What happens if your zoned LRSD school is full?

After a school tour today, I got to talking with a couple of moms in the parking lot. One of them asked a question none of us could answer: what happens if you're zoned for a school and they don't have room for your kid?

We all kind of looked at each other. So I told them I'd find out and post the answer here, for them and for anyone else wondering the same thing.

Here's what I found, in plain English.

If the school is full

LRSD assigns your child to the closest zoned school that has room. LRSD's assignment page says these students get bus transportation, and they go into a waiting pool for their own school in case a seat opens up.

It's temporary

LRSD says students assigned somewhere other than their zoned school move up to their zoned school the next year.

Rules can change, so confirm your situation with the Registration Office (contact info below).

You have other options too

Magnet schools. Magnet and specialty schools have their own application window and a lottery. Last year, current LRSD students applied November 10 to 21, new families applied December 1 to 19, and the lottery ran in January. This year's dates aren't posted yet, so keep an eye on lrsd.org. If last year is a guide, the window could open soon.

A transfer to another LRSD school (TNT). TNT stands for Transfer with No Transportation. It lets your child move to another LRSD zoned school with open seats.

  • No bus. You handle drop-off and pickup.
  • First come, first served, based on open seats.
  • Not for magnet or specialty schools.
  • Your child stays at least one semester.
  • One TNT per school year.
  • For high schoolers, it can affect sports eligibility for a year.
  • If there's no seat, your child goes on a waitlist.

The window is short. In past years it has been open for just a few days in February.

Arkansas School Choice. This state program lets you apply to a public school in another district, and since 2025, to another school inside your own district too.

  • Applications for next school year are accepted January 1 to June 1.
  • You can send it by mail, email, or drop it off. The state says districts can't require you to come in person.
  • If you're applying to another district, send it to both your home district and the new one.
  • Applications are time-stamped and handled in the order they come in.
  • You'll hear back within 15 days, and no later than July 1.
  • A school can say no if it's 95% full or more.
  • No bus. Transportation is on you unless the district agrees otherwise.
  • Your child is expected to stay the full school year.

Who to call

The LRSD Student Registration Office can tell you exactly where you stand.

If you've been through this, I'd love to hear how it went. Other parents learn the most from each other.
