Why We Started eduScout
Why We Started eduScout: Our Little Rock School Search Story
Before eduScout existed, we had a public Pre-K spot for our daughter.
We gave it up.
If you've ever searched for a school in Little Rock, you can probably guess some of what came next. If you haven't yet, this is the story we wish someone had told us first. It's also the reason eduScout exists.
We Only Knew the Deadline Because Another Parent Told Us
Here's the ironic part. The only reason we knew when to apply for Pre-K in the first place was that another parent mentioned it. That kind of information was almost impossible to find online.
A lot of school information in Central Arkansas still travels that way: a conversation at the playground, a comment buried in a Facebook group, a friend who happens to have an older child. If you're in the right circle, you hear about deadlines in time. If you're not, you find out after the window has closed.
When Plan B and Plan C Fell Through
We thought we had another school lined up. Then it fell through. Then another one did, too.
At one school, we were told there would be several interview dates. There was actually one. Because we couldn't make it, we were told to try again next year.
At another, we showed up for a scheduled tour, and no one knew we were coming. We gave them another chance.
Then Came the Shadow Day
We packed her little lunchbox. We rearranged work and childcare. We got her excited and ready, and we showed up.
They had no idea she was coming.
The teacher she was supposed to be with wasn't even there.
That was the moment I thought: if a school doesn't know my child is supposed to be here, how am I supposed to trust them with her every day?
What a School's Reputation Can't Tell You
These were well-known, expensive schools with good reputations. And none of that told us what it would actually be like to deal with them as parents.
A reputation is built on things you can see from the outside, like test scores, facilities, and word of mouth. Those things matter. But your daily life as a school parent depends on things that are much harder to see before you enroll. Does the front office call you back? Do the dates they give you hold up? When plans change, does anyone tell you?
We're not naming schools here, and that's on purpose. Every school has off days, and other families may have had a completely different experience at the same places. The point isn't that these were bad schools. It's that no website, ranking, or tuition price could have told us how they'd treat our family.
Back to Google, Facebook Groups, and Other Moms
So we ended up right back where we started. Google. Facebook groups. Other moms. Trying to piece together information that should have been easier to find.
If you're in the middle of your own school search, you probably know the feeling. Twelve tabs open, three screenshots of deadlines, and a friend-of-a-friend's opinion about a school you haven't toured yet. It's a lot, especially on top of work, naps, and everything else.
That experience became eduScout.
Information That Shouldn't Depend on Who You Know
eduScout started with a simple idea: finding the right school shouldn't depend on who you happen to know.
We help families in Little Rock and across Central Arkansas understand their options and keep track of the dates that matter. That includes zoned public schools, magnet and specialty programs, charter schools, private schools, microschools, and homeschooling, plus how transfers and Education Freedom Accounts fit in.
We don't rank schools or push families toward any one choice. Every family is looking for something different, and the right school for one child may not be the right school for another. Our job is to put clear, organized information in front of you so you can make that call with confidence.
If you're just getting started, these are good places to begin:
- The 5 kinds of schools in Central Arkansas, explained in plain English
- Every 2027–28 school deadline for Little Rock and Central Arkansas, in one calendar
- How Arkansas Education Freedom Accounts work, if you're weighing private school or homeschool
- Mother's Day Out and part-time childcare, for families with little ones who aren't quite ready for school
What We'd Tell a Friend Starting a School Search
As a parent, and as someone who now spends a lot of time with school calendars, here's what we'd tell a friend who's just starting out:
- Get every date in writing. Interviews, tours, testing, and shadow days. Then confirm a day or two before. A quick email can save you a rearranged workday.
- Ask what happens if you miss a date. How many interview or testing dates are there? Is there a makeup option? It's much better to know before you plan around it.
- Hold onto a sure thing when you can. If you have a confirmed spot, ask how long you have to accept it, and try not to give it up until your next option is confirmed in writing.
- Ask who your child will be with on a shadow day. A teacher's name and a classroom are fair things to ask for ahead of time.
- Notice how the school communicates now. How a school handles a tour request is a preview of how it will handle a pickup change or a question about your child.
- Talk to current parents. A tour shows you the building. Current families can tell you what it's like day to day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is eduScout?
eduScout helps families in Little Rock and Central Arkansas sort through their school options, from zoned public and magnet schools to charter schools, private schools, microschools, and homeschooling. We also gather application windows, transfer deadlines, and lottery dates in one place, so they're easier to find.
Why did you start eduScout?
Because of our own school search. We gave up a public Pre-K spot for our daughter, watched two other school plans fall through, and ended up piecing information together from Google, Facebook groups, and other parents. eduScout is the resource we wish we'd had.
Does eduScout recommend specific schools?
No. We cover every kind of school and don't play favorites. Our goal is to give you clear information so you can decide what fits your child and your family.
What areas does eduScout cover?
We focus on the Little Rock School District and cover communities across Central Arkansas, including North Little Rock, Conway, Benton, Bryant, Cabot, and Sheridan.
What should I ask on a private school tour or shadow day?
Ask for every date in writing, how many interview or testing dates there are, and what happens if you miss one. For a shadow day, ask which teacher and classroom your child will be with. Along the way, pay attention to how quickly and clearly the school communicates with you.
Have a School Search Story?
Whether yours was smooth, frustrating, or somewhere in the "you won't believe this" category, we'd love to hear it. Hearing from parents is how we decide what to cover next.
