Winter Break 2026 in Central Arkansas: Dates and Ideas
Winter break is a lovely idea that arrives with a very practical question: what do we do with two weeks? Between holiday plans, work schedules, and the usual "I'm bored" by day three, a little planning makes it a lot more fun.
Here's what we found on break dates for Central Arkansas districts, what's open and free or low-cost, a few learning ideas that don't feel like school, and the January deadlines worth putting on your calendar before you unplug.
Winter Break 2026–27 Dates
Every district we checked starts winter break Monday, December 21.
• Little Rock School District: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 1. Jan. 4–5 are work days with students out, so classes resume Wednesday, Jan. 6.
• North Little Rock School District: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 1. Jan. 4–5 are staff days with no classes, so students return Wednesday, Jan. 6.
• Pulaski County Special School District: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 1. Jan. 4 is a no-school professional development day, so students return Tuesday, Jan. 5.
• Cabot Public Schools: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 4. Jan. 5 is a no-school staff development day, and the second semester begins Wednesday, Jan. 6.
• Benton School District: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 1. Jan. 4 is a professional development and work day with no students, so students return Tuesday, Jan. 5.
• Bryant Public Schools: Break runs Dec. 21–Jan. 4. Jan. 4 is listed as a professional development day, so students likely return Tuesday, Jan. 5.
• Conway Public Schools: Break runs Dec. 21–31, plus New Year's Day. Jan. 4 is a virtual professional development day with no students, so students return Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The quick answer: Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Cabot students go back Wednesday, Jan. 6. Pulaski County Special, Benton, Conway, and most likely Bryant students go back Tuesday, Jan. 5.
Every row comes straight from that district's own 2026–27 calendar. Please check your district's calendar before you book anything.
If you have a young child in a Mother's Day Out or part-time preschool program, ask what its break schedule is. Many programs follow a local district's calendar, and some close on different dates. Our Mother's Day Out guide has details for programs across the area.
Before Break: Four Dates Worth Knowing
A few things happen in the weeks leading up to break.
• Thursday, Dec. 10: The Little Rock Zoo lists a sensory-friendly GloWILD evening from 5 to 9 p.m., with lights and sounds adjusted for sensory sensitivity. Confirm details on the zoo's site (Source: Little Rock Zoo).
• Saturday, Dec. 12: Little Rock Community Day at the Zoo. City of Little Rock residents can visit at a special low price from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Source: City of Little Rock).
• Sunday, Dec. 13: The North Little Rock Christmas Parade rolls down Main Street through the Argenta Arts District (Source: North Little Rock Tourism).
• Monday–Friday, Dec. 14–18: The Little Rock School District's calendar lists semester exams all week, and Friday, Dec. 18 is the last day of classes before break and the end of the second quarter. It's a good week to protect bedtimes and keep evenings low-key (Source: Little Rock School District).
Free and Low-Cost Ideas During Break
Ride the streetcar. The Rock Region METRO Streetcar is free and runs through downtown Little Rock and across the river to North Little Rock, which is a good way to see the holiday lights without a parking hunt (Source: Little Rock Tourism).
Tour the Arkansas State Capitol. Free guided tours run on weekdays at set times, so call ahead to check the holiday schedule (Source: Little Rock Tourism).
Climb Pinnacle Mountain. It's free, and a winter hike is a fine way to burn off cookies (Source: Little Rock Tourism).
Walk the downtown bridges at night. The illuminated bridges are a free treat after dark (Source: Little Rock Tourism).
Visit the Little Rock Zoo. It's open Christmas Eve from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day, with regular hours resuming December 26 and January 2 (Source: Little Rock Zoo). GloWILD is also closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Check your library. Central Arkansas libraries often post family events and craft programs during break. Browse your branch's calendar a week ahead.
See the art. The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts has been listed with free admission and parking, though it's worth confirming before you go.
Learning Ideas That Don't Feel Like School
Break is for rest, and it's also a nice time to let curiosity wander. Here are ideas that stay fun.
Cozy
• Read-aloud marathon. Pick one longer book and finish it over break. Everyone takes a turn reading.
• Library haul. Let each person pick five books, any five, with no rules.
Cook
• Run the kitchen. Pick a recipe, scale it up or down, and let the kids measure. It's math, reading, and science in one.
• Make a menu. Older kids can plan a family dinner, budget the groceries, and cook it.
Create
• Make a family time capsule. Write about the year, add photos or drawings, and seal it to open next December.
• Design a board game. Make the rules, the board, and the pieces. Test it with the family and fix what doesn't work.
Explore
• Track the shortest day. The winter solstice falls around December 21, the first day of break for many districts. Note when the sun sets, and compare it with a few weeks before or after.
• Go on a winter nature walk. Look for what's different from fall, like bare trees, animal tracks, and birds that stick around.
• Visit something new. Pick one place in Central Arkansas you've never been to, and go.
Keep Skills Fresh, Lightly
• Ten minutes of reading a day. Anywhere, any book, including comics.
• Letters and cards. Writing thank-you notes for gifts is real writing practice with a real reader.
• Games. Cards, chess, and dice games build counting, strategy, and patience.
Easing Back In
A week before school starts, shift bedtime and wake-up times about 15 minutes earlier each night. It's gentler than a sudden jump on the first Monday. Lay out backpacks and clothes the night before, and keep the first day back low-key.
January Deadlines to Put on the Calendar
If you're thinking about next school year, January arrives fast. A few dates to note before you start break:
• January 1, 2027: The Arkansas School Choice window opens. It runs through June 1, 2027.
• January 1–15, 2027: Little Rock School District magnet applications for families who live outside the district, submitted with an Arkansas School Choice form.
• January 19–29, 2027: Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School auditions and Forest Heights STEM Academy document review for prospective students.
• February 8, 2027: LRSD magnet lottery letters go out.
Families who live within LRSD boundaries apply in the earlier November 9–20 window. Our LRSD open enrollment guide has every date, and our guide to the five kinds of schools in Central Arkansas explains how each option works. Live outside Little Rock? See our 2027–28 guide for the counties around Little Rock.
